Why would my alcohol tester say 0% when I know there is alcohol?

we bought a hydrometer device that is supposed to tell you percent alcohol. We tested it in wine that we bought and it was accurate. We then tested it in wine that we made and it said there is no alcohol (which after consuming a bottle, I can ure you is not accurate). Any ideas as to why we can't get a reading?
