How do you clean expensive shoes without ruining them?

Last time I tried washing my shoes but then they just tore. I just got the new Jordan retro 1's and they are made of suede and nubuck but the suede and nubuck cleaning kit I bought at Footaction doesn't work very well...How can I clean these and get the dirt off effectively without leaving water stains or messing them up.
