Having some problems applying eyeliner?

Whenever i put eyeliner on i try and put it as close to my eyelashes as possible. Then when i open my eyes it looks like theres a space between the eyeliner and eyelashes. I use a self-sharpening eyeliner. I dont like cat eyes or anything. Just a neat line of eyeliner thats not thick. If you could give some tips or just tell me how to do it right so that wont happen. That would be great. Thanks!
