Why do first base man need diffrent mitts?

The bigger mitt makes it easier to catch that may not be thrown perfectly, ie in the dirt. It also doesnt matter that is is big because first basemen generally do not need to get rid of the ball quickly like a shortstop or second basemen would need to do.
